Home      Want to own a Great Dane?

Your life will change the day you bring your Great Dane home. Please seriously consider the commitment you can give to this breed and the size that they grow into as there are still too many people who give their Danes away after they've fully grown as they're too much to handle. With your Great Dane you will get a true companion.

The obvious considerations should be given to how much time each day can you give to your new puppy, will the house/car be big enough when he is fully grown, are you prepared to spend time training your Dane; an untrained Great Dane is a liability. What will you do if you have to go away for a period of time?

Be prepared for a huge amount of slobber when they are expecting food, drinking or generally excited about food. This will go worse as they grow older and it does go everywhere when the shake their head - I mean literally everywhere - on the walls, the ceiling, your clothes, furniture... They can also be quite clumsy with their long legs and getting under your feet despite their size. Their tail is also very strong so do not leave your wine glass on the coffee table!

Buy plenty of chew toys and keep a close eye on them as they tend to chew on everything, especially at the beginning when their teeth are still growing. Sofas, edges of tables, chair legs, remote controls...

Start as you mean to go on. It is a lot easier to train a puppy from start that to change habits six months later and having to re-train your dog. They are small and cute so you let them on the sofa to watch the tv in the evenings or they are allowed to jump on the bed in the mornings. You will have a job cut out for you trying to stop that same fully grown Dane from jumping on the sofa/bed 6 months later because he is now too big!
